ADE Architecture Extensively Refurbishes a Home in London, England

By • Feb 20, 2017

When many people think of modern housing, their minds often go to brand new buildings that have only just been constructed. On the contrary, however, some of our favourite contemporary homes have actually already been standing for generations and have simply been recently refurbished. We’re huge fans of any design and decor scheme that makes an otherwise outdated building into something modern but comfortable. That’s exactly the story with House Four!

House Four is a private residential home located in that heart of London, England. Originally built in the 1930s, it was redesigned in 2016 by innovative teams at . The actual construction of the home stays quite true to the original design and layout, but with the addition of several clear glass demi-walls, a glass floor to ceiling wall leading out to a simple patio, and a stunning solid wood barn style door welcoming visitors into the entryway.

While designers were undoubtedly aiming for something a little more contemporary in their transformation of this home, they avoided taking things entirely into the realm of modernity. The use of dark, intentionally worn wood keeps things grounded in a more natural aesthetic by contrasting beautifully with the gorgeously smooth marble used across the floors, kitchen islands, and counter tops. Furniture and accessories are placed throughout the house in contemporary shapes, ornate patterns, and small pops of colour, giving visitors in each room something interesting to look at, sit on, or appreciate. While the bedroom remains very current and chic in its light, stylish aesthetic, the living rooms present quite a grand, stately decor scheme that hearkens back to what the original rooms might have looked like. The contrast between styles is nothing short of gorgeous.
