A Wonderful Property from 1900 Becomes a Modern and Elegant Home

This property, housed in a building dating back to the early 1900s in a former industrial site in central London, England, in the United Kingdom, was remodeled in 2015 by the architectural firm . The renovation revealed, in a magical way, the remaining original elements, which had been neglected during the previous renovation works, and stripped many of the recent additions to reveal and display the original historical fabric.
The fantastic interior covers an area of 490 square meters of construction, and the owners intended to grow old in the home. For this, they needed a sensible relationship between all the rooms and the possibility of a future adaptability, which has been achieved by expanding the existing basement and extending the building vertically.
It was also fundamental to rationalize the spaces of the rooms, so they were distributed across different levels, giving the kitchen and living room generous spaces with open plans.
An independent, suspended staircase made of steel and wood is placed as part of the space. Elegant but functional, it goes from the basement to the roof, rationalizing the vertical circulation and paying homage to the industrial past of the building.
Despite the logistical challenges of creating space in a restricted structure and the previous renovation work of the 1990s, the architectural team managed to find the difficult balance between creating an innovative residential building and fidelity to history.
